At the moment I have no working controllers and no spare hard drive for this task. So far I know that it works and loads FreeMcBoot just fine (props to for that!). Rather than dump even more money (at 50 bucks so far) into this I'd like to boot my game backups over the network. I'd like to ask a few questions first however. How fast is the network adapter?
Is it significantly slower than IDE?. Is compatibility with OPL the same?
Or will fewer games load?. It's my understanding that OPL uses SMB shares for ethernet loading. Has anyone gotten this to work with Samba?Thank you for your time. How fast is the network adapter? Is it significantly slower than IDE?Slower than a PATA HDD, yes. I believe the most I got out of a network connection was around 3 MB/s.
For some reason, I've found that enabling mode 6 (disable IGR) on a game alleviates FMV lag.Is compatibility with OPL the same?YesIt's my understanding that OPL uses SMB shares for ethernet loading. That's true. I've never tried Samba, but I've gotten it to work easily on windows using a few clicks. My best tip for using the network method: if you're not going to be using a crossover cable, then use a router that does not have a WAN (internet) connection.
WAN connections always cause trouble. Smb is a little bit slower. Some games will occasionally stutter on fmv's (esp grandia3) and have a little bit higher load times. It's more or less perfectly comfy to play in majority of games, though.compatibility might be slightly different. Different game loading methods leave different amount of free IOP memory and that is the deciding factor in compatibility.yes, samba works just fine.
Many people even connect their ps2's to NAS devices which also run samba most of the time. If you have some kind of small device that can serve SMB shares, you get get by without a pc this way.
